This is the senior ASD class catering for pupils in the age range 14-18 years. Pupils in this class have a moderate learning disability. The pupils have difficulties in communicating and forming relationships with people, in developing language and in using abstract concepts. It also impacts on their ability to make sense of the world around them. Sensory processing difficulties are indicated by either an over or under sensitivity across any or all of the senses.
Highly structured behavioural programmes are in place and various different strategies are used to implement these programmes. Systems of communication used are PECS, TEAACH, Ipads and RPM. Developing pupil’s practical, social and life skills is a priority in the senior class. St. Brid’s provides a transition programme for those pupils in their final school year, allowing pupils and their families to sample a range of opportunities for future adult life.
